Lights/Fort

Note: Originally this was going to be one piece. But I split it up into two. So in the issue of fairness, it will be posted as both complete and in its separate parts.

The Lights

Lights appear in the darkness. Will o’ the wisps, drifting in the night, blaring with incandescent illumination. Dancing over the plain, shadowing the contours of the land, surging into the night tide, soaring in the gloaming then slanting back to the ground, before flickering, fading into the dust.

The Fort

The soldiers man the fort. The fort looks out over the great plain. The fort has existed for years but has seen limited action. The soldiers will has been sapped and the fort has fallen into dereliction. The senses are dulled and numb, and if a large-scale attack does come, the fort will give way.

And now Together

The soldiers man the fort. The fort looks out over the great plain. The fort has existed for years but has seen limited action. The soldiers will has been sapped and the fort has fallen into dereliction. The senses are dulled and numb, and if a large-scale attack does come, the fort will give way.

Lights appear in the darkness. Will o’ the wisps, drifting in the night, blaring with incandescent illumination. Dancing over the plain, shadowing the contours of the land, surging into the night tide, soaring in the gloaming then slanting back to the ground, before flickering, fading into the dust.

The soldiers watch the lights, the sole distraction in their isolated existence.
