Starless Black

Moons great light pools in thousand cloud peaks
under starless black a bell rings without cessation.
Lone wanderer caught in a slow flurry of wandering bones
empty pages know nothing of the words that will never land.

thousand cloud peaks moons great light lost
under starless black bells ring with river deep sorrow
bones of the starved follow wanderers down dust laden streets
words will never arrive on these empty pages

Skeletons. Giant ones. And I debated using the first picture. Because its terrifying.

  1. The images tell a story in their own right. And your poem, reflecting as it does on words and empty pages, speaks of the mortality the hangs over all of us. Chilling images.

  2. claudia says:

oh heck…those pics gave me shivers…. and also the words that never arrive on these empty pages…the lives that couldn’t write their page to the end…

  3. MarinaSofia says:

This verse cuts like a knife: ’empty pages know nothing of the words that will never land.’ And those skeletons feeding off the spirits of those dying in famines… very scary indeed.

  4. poemblaze says:

Very creepy all around. But I think that’s what you intended. 😉

  5. Mary says:

Enjoyed the eeriness of your words and pictures.

  6. Gabriella says:

Frightening paintings! And once cannot help be sorry if “words will never arrive on these empty pages”

  7. kelly says:

these are wonderful, i especially love the title and these lines:
“Lone wanderer caught in a slow flurry of wandering bones
empty pages know nothing of the words that will never land.”

all those lost words, so poignant and sad…

  8. Talicha J. says:

“empty pages know nothing of the words that will never land” nice job with this one, I really enjoyed the way you incorporated the images 🙂

  9. brian miller says:

that line on empty pages never knowing the words….that one was def worth the read….its converse as well in the second verse…..very effective…

  10. Alex Dissing says:

I always enjoy how your words clarify your pictures. I especially liked the last line of this one.

  11. Ruth says:

macabre and a fascinating read, i like how you’ve ordered and reordered words & phrases in response to the individual images – & those empty pages, those wandering words haunting, always haunting

  12. Rowan Taw says:

It’s the “empty pages” that really strike…they move the poem from eerie to sad.

  13. Though the images are eerie, I felt a deep sorrow as I read your words..especially the part of empty pages..making me mindful of those who have no one to hear their story of hunger, be it through starvation or torment.

  14. Gay Cannon says:

Creepy pictures yield brilliant, impressionist word images. Wonderfully turned words to enhance the vision.

  15. Manicddaily says:

To me the most terrifying thought is the idea of words never landing! So sad for the pages! (So sad to think of as writer and reader too.) Very cool poem. k.

  16. yelena says:

    eerie yet magically beautiful wordings…

You are such an awesome poet! Where did you come up with this?

    • I’ve been thinking about this reply for a while, so apologies.

The form is based on ancient chinese poetry (Wang Wei/Po-Chu I), and the ideas, well, general reading, Asian myth and legend, Japanese Pro-Wrestling, Pokemon and other things.

So, in conclusion I can’t really say it’s one thing or another. It’s a bizarre hodge podge of things.

And many thank you’s for reading and commenting.

the bells ringing feels like a death knell, at least to these ears.
feels like so so much more than words being lost, never landing on a page.
i get so lost in your poetry skyraftwanderer, i really need to travel back in your
archives for what i’ve missed….and how you continue finding such original images, ty for that too.

    • Thank you for commenting.

If you do go archiving, I think my writing has changed alot, partilculary from the early days. Ahh, finding a theasaurus for the first time (because really, why use one word when seven will do?).

  19. naramalone says:

Those rattling bones are like a wake up call, reminding me to get those words down. A day missed can’t be recovered. Thanks for the chilling mmessage.

  20. Pamela says:

Sky, you do have a way with the turn of a phrase. It just left Brian’s blog and these coincide nicely.

You’re right…the images, esp. the first …terrifying…but so are your words…terrifyingly beautiful.. I esp. like “empty pages knowing nothing of the words that will never land” …a memorable write! xo

  22. Jeep Walters says:

Marvelously macabre! Save words that never land for the next great piece you write. They’ll find a home.

  23. Linda E.H. says:

THis can be a hard form but you did a great job. Nice imagery. I really like “empty pages know nothing of the words that will never land”.

  24. grapeling says:

you’ve tapped into us with those empty pages…
