The Thunder God and The Mud

Ten thousand layers of mud.
Another district crumples to dust.

Eighty four days. Yellow robes caked in mud. Empty hands continue
searching. Scarred and twisted, tendons stretched beyond mortal limits.
Thoughts of Izanagi and Izanami preserve effort and rend doubt.
The clouds have blurred into an ever flowing stream.

Ten thousand layers of mud.
Pagodas shift but do not fall.

Eighty five days. Toothed maw wraps around empty hands. Sheer
strength halts the under pull. It circles through the mud but Izanagi
and Izanami maintain the effort. The position held under a clear
night sky, the dipper shines bright. Tiger roars echo in half-open eyes.

Ten thousand layers of mud.
Maple leaves drift, and drift.

It keeps thrashing, but he won’t let go. Vast black scatters mud
across heavens width. A frantic effort belies desperation. His
grip tightens. Izanagi and Izanami keep him strong. Sunken eyes
gaze upon the setting sun. Broken clouds sail aimlessly.

Ten thousand layers of mud.
All is still.

A pull that could drag heaven itself. Giant black tail flops on the
mud fields, fins and barbels flail. He hauls the catch to the shore,
the blue mountain shines bright. People cheer the laying of the
pinning stone. An empty night. Tigers roam across dream scape.

Ten thousand layers of mud.
Izanagi and Izanami endure.

The Namazu myth combined with The Old Man and The Sea. Or at the very least an attempt at that.

I tried to use this myth in haiku after the Tsunami. I don’t think it worked nearly as well as your writing above. 🙂

I like your blog name. 🙂 This is my favorite line: “Toothed maw wraps around empty hands.”

  4. joanna says:

you know, i was just looking at some of the aftermath pictures of the Bangladeshi factory collapse right before coming here, and your words seemed to flow from the images as if they were a natural continuation, that first couplet in particular. oh, and i love the line about the tigers roaming across the dream scape.

  5. Alex Dissing says:

Wow, so many artfully crafted images in this one.

  6. Timoteo says:

I know it’s really tectonic plate shifts–but the catfish explanation is much more romantic (in a fishy sort of way).

  7. Amazing, isn’t it, that this myth, this retelling is as relevant to today’s news as it is to ancient events. You recreate the story with vivid detail and a compelling flow.

mmm…nice…and you have to wonder as well when these myths stay relevant to today how they could do that…what a really cool rendering you have given…vivid and intense…nicely done…

  9. Chazinator says:

This is an interesting poem that parallels several in middle eastern mythology. Your description is quite epic in tone and it was very compelling. I felt myself quite immersed in the action.

Mythic ancient upheavals, relevant, vivid, and I think one of your very best poetic expressions. 🙂 xo

I really enjoyed the myth telling and was impressed with how relevant it seems.

Fabulous tension, you weave the tale into a fabulous tapestry. Yes, it does seem so relevant today, I somehow find that comforting.
